About Shirley
Shirley Breuer is a Physical Therapist with 39 years of experience who believes the goal of health care is to EDUCATE the patient in a manner to promote optimum health and that successful outcomes in therapy come from a joint effort of skilled Physical Therapy, communication and participation/follow through by the patient.
During her career, Ms. Breuer has treated neurological and orthopedic patients and has extensive postgraduate education in manual therapy including Muscle Energy Techniques, Myofascial Release Techniques, Mulligan Techniques, TMJ Dysfunction, Jones Strain/Counterstrain, Neural Tension Testing, Visceral Releases and Craniosacral Therapy.
Ms. Breuer has been Board Certified by the American Physical Therapy Association in Connecticut in the specialty of Orthopedics since 1998- a distinction which exceeds the new entry level Doctorate in Physical Therapy degree.
She is also a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist by the National Strength and Conditioning Association and has been utilized as a Sports Medicine and health consultant for Fox 61 and served as Physical Therapist to the Semi-Pro Continental Basketball Association Connecticut Pride Team. She tended to runners at the Boston Marathon for 10 years and was one of 4 therapists selected to work with the runners in the elite tent at the 100th Boston Marathon in 1996.
Ms. Breuer received her BS in Physical Therapy and a MA in Education with an emphasis in Sports Medicine from the University Connecticut where she graduated as a University Scholar and Honors Scholar. She was selected as the first UCONN Alumni to be inducted into Alpha Eta: an Allied Health Honor Society that recognizes excellence in teaching and was named the Outstanding Alumni from the Physical Therapy Program at UCONN in May, 2006. She served as adjunct faculty at the University of Connecticut from 1987-2007, is presently a guest lecturer at UCONN and American International College and has served on both the Ethics and Membership committee for the Connecticut Physical Therapy Association.
In addition to working full time clinically, she began her professional teaching career in 1985 and has presented lectures at APTA Chapter Conferences in Connecticut, Massachusetts and New Hampshire, the Lahey Clinic, and has taught continuing education courses throughout the East Coast as well as across the country. She has appeared on Bloomfield Public TV on a show called, "All About Physical Therapy" and provides lectures to companies on worksite safety and ergonomics as she also is a Certified Ergonomic Assessment Specialist.
When she’s not working, she enjoys playing golf, hiking, cycling, playing the piano and can be seen officiating Girls and Boys Volleyball throughout CT. In 2016 she had the honor of being inducted as an official in the CT Women’s Volleyball Hall of Fame.
